Safari Retreat Recap

Safari Hat is a must

A few days ago I got back from Kenya, where I led a Wellness Safari Retreat. It was the best time with such wonderful people and I thought I’d share some snaps of our trip.

The days went by so fast, and we packed a lot into each day. We did morning game drives around 6:30am to see the animals, and in the evenings we did another short game drive with sundowners (basically like a happy hour on the plains, as shown here). It was amazing because we’d be hanging out on the plains, on foot, and in the distance there’d be a herd of elephants. Just incredible.

There were so many lion prides this time around, which meant we saw lions pretty frequently, which was amazing. The downside of so many prides of lions, though, is that the cheetah population has decreased significantly. Apparently the lions don’t eat them, they just kill them, wanting to be the only predator in the area.

We saw so many beautiful elephants as well.

In addition to twice daily game drives (and some days three!), we also had daily yoga, mobility and/or fitness classes. Here are just a few of our group after a yoga sesh.

Our guides, as always, were so knowledgeable. Any time we would come across anything, they’d tell us everything we could ever want to know about it. Here’s the skull of a buffalo.

Is anything cuter than a cub? I don’t think so. Look at those eyes!

Truly, every time I go, I am blown away. I’ve been so many times, and it just doesn’t get old.

Here’s Jen, one of our group, checking out the plains in search of beasts with her binocs.

Hyenas are one of my favorite animals. They just remind me so much of dogs. Like look at that little snout, don’t you just wanna smooch it?! haha.

Just off the main deck where we eat is a little fire pit area, and I sat down to have some tea, and looked over to see all these elephants. You just feel so removed from the real world when you’re on safari - it’s such a breath of literal and figurative fresh air.

Most of the days, we did yoga on the veranda of one of the cottages. It looks out over the plains and sometimes you can see baboons, giraffe, or elephants out in the front. Talk about yoga with a view!

On one of the days, we had a cooking class, making typical Kenyan food. It’s always so much fun to get to work with the chefs!

You know I can’t pass a mirror without taking a selfie haha. Here I was on our trip into town. Many people ask about the weather - when you’re on the equator in Kenya at this time of year, it’ll be quite chilly in the morning and evenings (like 50s-60s) and then midday it will be HOT with very very intense sun.

Overall, it was such an incredible trip as always, and I’m so looking forward to going back. I don’t yet have dates for the next retreat, but be sure to sign up for my newsletter if you’re interested in coming on the next one!
